You may want to start slow with reinforcement to get him used to it. [Like a harness. He thinks that's probably fairly equivocal.
Syrlya follows Bruno into the kitchen, making an immediate beeline for the drawers. He starts at the very end, opening one and quickly glancing its contents before closing it and moving onto the next.] Let's see, matches, matches... aha!
Or I keep him penned up... sheesh, I'd have to build a pretty big place for him to live in. He's used to scurrying all around the place through the walls.
[ Ah, but there are matches. Bruno gives them an uncertain look as Syrlya holds them up but he will reach out to take them. ]
Alright... Guess we see if this does it?
[ He takes a step back from Mr. Plantman over there and then, thinking about how flammable plants are, takes another step back before pulling a match free and stating nervously, ]
Su futuro espera.
[ And he lights the match.
And waits.
The match flickers faintly with fire but... nothing particularly special happens. ]
Try to cast an actual spell. The spirits may not know what to do without some direction, since the focus seems to be meant to hone their attention. [He glances around the kitchen for some inspiration. What would be a simple spell?] Perhaps lighting the wood in the stove?
[ Bruno blows out the first match and pulls a new one. He turns towards the stove and lights the new one, stating his incantation a second time. Okay, he wants... fire? Fire! Light that stove!
Aaand there's... a slight swell of magic attempting to do the thing, but it sputters out almost immediately after. ]
[ where's a tv let's check in with the stardew oracle about how the spirits feel ]
Uh, okay. Once more... with...
[ He blows out the spent match and tucks it into a pocket with the first, then gets a third. This time, he strikes the match and states his incantation with feeling! ]
Su futuro espera!
[ And holds the newly lit match up high with quite the dramatic gesture and everything! Following that? Nothing. Not even that sputter from before. Bruno holds that pose a little bit longer and then nervously looks back at Syrlya. ]
Not really? I... have stuff but all of that is just that, stuff.
[ What could be sentimental enough to be a focus? ]
Um. Well, can't be dad's portrait, that's huge and not here. There's the Miracle's candle but that's a... weird one, and also not here. I guess mom's pocket watch? But I don't have that, she does.
It wouldn't have to be lit back in Tyria, but the rules of magic in this place are quite different. Perhaps... if it will be a candle, attempt to create it as a candle which does not go out?
[Since this is a focus made of magic, and probably not some sort of "stealing things from other worlds hammerspace". Probably.]
Uhhh. Probably? Wait, wait, let me get into the right mindset for doing, y'know... magic... [ Vague gesture. ] Let's see. What do we have in here that would work like sand?
[ And he immediately begins searching the cupboards. ]
Let's see. Flour? Sugar?
[ Oh no, time to make a mess in the kitchen, good thing this is so backtagged that Shinji can't do anything about it. ]
It was... something that helped, in the past. I don't think I need it for this but if I go through the motions, maybe it'll be easier for me.
[ Anyway, he's snagging the bag of sugar and finding a more open space on the kitchen floor to begin pouring out a circle. He does it with a well-practiced hand, big enough to stand in and then some. ]
Pretty much. I don't think I'll be talking to any of them while we're, like, in... the Central Country? Is that right?
[ Because he's supposedly a South wizard, whatever that means. Regardless, he finishes the circle and sets the bag down. The next step is to light a match, although he puts that out with a puff of air right away before holding his hand out. ]
Su futuro espera...
[ He needs a focus. He wants a pocket watch, just like his mother's watch, or close to it. Brass, fancy-looking, important. Well, maybe not that important, but for someone like him? Who sees into the future? Time has always been important.
As he thinks hard about what he wants, green light begins to gather into the palm of his hand out of thin air, beginning to make a shape. ]
[ The rest of the shape takes form, solidifying into what Bruno was hoping it would be, and what's left in the palm of his hand by the end of the spell is exactly that: a brass pocket watch with a stylized hourglass inscribed on the top cover.
Bruno opens his eyes again and looks down at it, surprised to find it there for a second or two but then a grin bursts across his face. ]
[Syrlya's expression brightens with a grin and he claps his hands together.] Fantastic! [He steps closer, leaning to get a better look at it.] You should try casting a spell with it.
Should I? [ Oh, but... but... Bruno looks between Syrlya and the focus. ] Like, um. Like what kind of spell? I. I've only ever done one kind of magic before and that's not. Not really this kind?

Perhaps try one more time. In case the spirits are being finicky.

Hmm. [Syrlya's expression scrunches as be scrutinizes Bruno's match, rubbing his chin.]
Perhaps it really isn't sentimental enough. You're sure there's nothing you can think of that holds some value to you?

[ Not that he'll put the pack of matches way. No, he's going to pocket the remainder, shh, it's fine. ]
I wonder. A candle would be kind of tough to use since it would still need to be lit?

...] Maybe blowing this sugar away? Or make it disappear? That should be possible with magic here.
