[ While Day summons his staff, Kurapika affixes rings to each of his fingers, small and dainty with tiny chains attached to each ring. Using his magic, he transforms the rings into something sturdier, the little chain links transforming into something bigger as they wrap over his arm and underneath his sleeve. ]
I'm trying out something new I've been working on. It's closer to what I use back home... but you already know that.
[ They remind Day a little of the rings Velvet uses back home, though in her case, they were more for wires and strings than chains. Day quietly murmurs a spell to reinforce his staff, because he gets the feeling he's going to need it. He carefully wraps his prayer beads around his right wrist and arm, then gets into a stance. ]
[ Kurapika wastes no time at all leaping to the side in an attempt to throw Day off by quickly changing where he stands, and he sways his hand, causing one of his chains to swing out towards Day in an attempt to hit him (17). There's a heavy ball at the end, the weight of it propelling the chain in the direction he wants it to go. ]
[ Day is amazed at how Kurapika just immediately comes out swinging, even knowing this is just a spar. Kurapika succeeds in catching him off-guard, and it's only through sheer reflex that he doesn't take a worse hit. He still takes a chain to the shoulder and flinches (14). Man, he forgot how much getting hit by one could hurt.
It does stop him from trying to swing his staff at Kurapika while he has the chance to (14). Either he hits or misses or he catches a chain, all of which Day's willing to work with. ]
[ He manages to catch a chain, as Kurapika isn't able to bring it back in time, so it tangles around the staff (2). With a frown, he attempts to tug on it with not much to show for it.
That's fine.
He has another chain, one with a small blade at the end, that he propels towards Day as a feint to distract him, the blade whizzing past Day's ear (15). ]

[ HE is in fact here for weapon practice, yes! ]

[ He laughs softly at that. ]
Then let's head into the courtyard.
[ There should be plenty of room there, so he'll go ahead and exit his room and lock the door behind him. ]
How do you feel about facing off against my chains?

[ He uses transformative magic on them instead, which has been an interesting exercise.
And speaking of exercise, he's taking the stairs rather than the elevator to get to the first floor. ]
Of course, I can still move them around in much the same way.

That's what makes them interstin'. So we're good to use magic too?

[ And he'd like to see what spells Day has cooked up anyway.
Once they hit the first floor, he heads toward the exit leading towards the courtyard. ]

[ Once they reach the courtyard, Day will be using his magic to summon a staff. It's a very simple, plain one made of oak. ]

[ He looks over at Day. ]
I'm ready when you are.

Ready.
