...attempt a divination... [ Bruno echoes the words quietly and looks thoughtful. ] Huh. I wonder if people would hate my visions less if I explained them that fancily.
[ Probably not! ]
Uh, but, great! Good. That's. Yeah, good. I figure someone who's studied this stuff might help a lot if. If it works, anyway, or if it ends up being weird or something.
This isn't the first time that Bruno has alluded to his magic being perceived negatively. Maybe Urianger can offer a bit of reassurance.]
In mine experience, 'tis unfortunately common for the masses to react negatively toward a divination if it is perceived as a threat to them, minor or otherwise. But it must be remembered that a divinationโa visionโis not absolute. 'Tis a tool to be interpreted and managed. Even the most cataclysmic of prophecies can be averted.
[With that little tangent completed, he effortlessly segues into the matter at hand.]
Should thy divination prove successful, pray keep that in mind. We shall do what we can.
Oh, sure, unless you... you catastrophically fail at that part, too. Which is, uh. D not... not something I'm used to, mmhm, nope, totally on board with averting, do it all the time, uh huh.
[ Haha, yeah, he's totally not a huge failure who probably doesn't deserve his gift. Look, he doesn't want to seem like too much of a loser around Urianger, okay? Sadly, he is not the most convincing of men, but such is life.
After an awkward clearing of his throat, he's quick to turn and start off down the hallway. ]
Anyway, c'mon, we're gonna need some space outside for this.
[Ope, there Bruno goes. Well...Urianger tried, though he's beginning to wonder if he's only ever doing more harm than good in trying to reassure his fellow seer. At the very least, he'll make sure he can support the actual divination process.
After closing the door behind him, it takes Urianger a few paces before he's caught up to Bruno. The previous subject is quietly dropped in favor of what is to come.]
I look forward to seeing the technique thou hast developed on thine own.
[ Sorry, Urianger, your fellow seer is an anxious mess and will forever be so. He knows defying fate is no simple task but if he goes on about how it never works out for him, he fears he'll sound like exactly what he is (in his own mind): a big loser. He's spent his entire life winging it, versus this guy? Who's some super scholar on the subject?
Kind of intimidating, right? ]
Well, the entire show isn't exactly necessary, but it lets me share what I'm seeing with other folks when I go through with it, so, uh, just keep that in mind if it seems a little... dramatic?
[ He'll head down the hall and down the stairs, weaving his way through the manor until he's leading them out the back. ]
[And he seems to be serious about that, too. This really is interesting. And since they're still on their way to the courtyard, Urianger ventures a follow-up in case Bruno is willing to speak more on his methods.]
How dost thou typically go about it when thou art alone?
When I'm alone? Hmmm, I guess I just... decide to have a vision? Or one happens on its own, usually. I'm not exactly a fan of them, so I'm all, nope, don't want any, and pretend I can't do anything at all.
[ He had a nice, long ten-year streak going until Mirabel literally kicked his door down, too! ]
[Yeah, considering everything Urianger's learned leading up to this, it's not exactly a surprise to discover that once Bruno learned how to control his visions he just turned them off completely.]
And what hast thou concerned enough to tap into thy magick now?
[It could be any number of things, in Urianger's mind.]
Good question. I... mostly my own nerves? I mean, I always expect the worst, so, it's like. That's the worst? Plus, do we even know if people who come here can go home? Have any of the past sages ever gone home? What if it's not even a thing?
[ One-way trip elevator is a big concern for him.
He leads the way out further afield from the manor until there's an open space. It's one he's already picked out, hence why he's already brought out the bucket of sand he'll need. That he snags, taking it with him as he begins to pour out a circle. ]
[Okay, so Bruno may have admitted to being a huge pessimist but Urianger tends not to doubt the vibes a fellow seer is getting.]
It very well may be the case that a previous sage hath not returned home. But I have not come across the confirmation that โtis an impossibility.
As our powers grow, so too do our chances of discovering a path home. We must have faith.
[He and his comrades have found a way home from another world once, so it can happen again!! Letโs just ignore how it canโt be easily replicated in different circumstances.
Once they reach Brunoโs chosen site for the divination, Urianger quietly watches the preparations. Using sand for divinationโฆitโs new to him. Heโs curious to see how it comes into play.]
Yeah... there's that, I guess. I haven't actually seen or heard or read anything that says it can't be done but, like, the sage journals are sort of useless, and I get the feeling folks here are kind of new to writing down history.
[ Not that his own village was some shining star of the written word or anything. In any case, he finishes the circle and sets the remaining sand outside of it before stepping to the center. He'll gesture for Urianger to step in and join him. ]
Yeah, well, if we end up stuck here, guess we'd at least have something to work on. Writing history, though. That's probably harder than writing plays.
[ What was that about plays? Never mind that, there's no time to ask! Since Bruno is crouching down to place a collection of kindling down at the center of the circle. ]
Uh, just try not to get blown away, I guess? I mean, I've never had that happen before, but there's definitely going to be wind. Like, a lot of wind.
[ Sorry, Urianger, you'll have to unlock Bruno's romance route to get the deep telenovela loreโ actually, no, really, just ask later, he won't shut up about them once he gets started. ]
And one last thing and... [ Bruno, still crouched down by the kindling, opts to use an actual, real match to light it rather than a bit of magic, strangely enough, before rising back to his feet. That done, he offers Urianger his hands. ] Hang onto your ears, buddy.
[ And once Urianger does just that (take his hands, not... not hold his ears, that was just a figure of speech, honest), he'll close his eyes and reach for his Gift. He isn't certain whether it's still powered by the Miracle or by this new world's own spirits, but he does know that the wind begins to pick up and the flickering little fire between them bursts upwards into a fiendishly green light. From there, the wind picks the flame up and drags it along with it as it creates what looks to be a tornado of green flame with them standing dead center in its eye. ]
[Oh they absolutely need to talk about telenovelas for hours now. Put it on the future thread docket.
Urianger peers down at Bruno's hands before taking them. Quite tightly too, because he's taking the warning seriously. With the final piece of the puzzle in place, the ritual begins. Urianger's gaze drifts as the breeze rolls in. Where he should have been looking is down, because the sudden pillar of fire catches him completely by surprise.
Fortunately, he keeps himself planted and hands clasped in Bruno's. He trusts Bruno, so he knows this must be working as intended. And with that initial surprise out of the way, he's able to really take in the spectacle unfolding around them.]
This is incredible, Bruno.
[He keeps his words short for the sake of Bruno's concentration, but he can't help but gush a little because come on, this is so cool. He's genuinely never seen a divination like it.]
[ Fair enough that he keeps his words short. Bruno's in no position to answer anything until he stabilizes the vision. He focuses on that for a time, letting the whirlwind of fire and sand reach its zenith before opening his eyes again. Those? Those are different now, glowing that same eerie green, matching the very flames swirling about the two of them.
It's around that same time that images begin sketching themselves across the flames. It would seem the whirlwind acts as a canvas of a sort, displaying the same visions that Bruno is seeing for the sake of anyone else who happens to be there with him. In this case, for Urianger.
The wind still blows, hard, but Bruno will let go of one hand so he can turn to observe what's showing itself. For him, though, it's like seeing double. He's witnessing the vision directly and squinting at what's showing up in the wind all at once. ]
There's... what is that? The moon?
[ The first outcome to come roaring across the flame and sand is of twenty-five figures facing down the moon, the Calamity they were brought here to help fend off. That's a worry. They weren't meant to be the ones facing this. That isn't the end of it, though. The wind blows that vision away, replacing it with the same... no, wait, not the same...
The second version only has twenty-one figures in it. ]
[Whoa. Urianger almost gets stuck staring into Bruno's eyes for a moment. That glow might be eerie and unnerving to some, perhaps, but it's brilliant to this elezen. However, the vision coming to life around them draws his attention where it should be. He watches the moon come into view, along with the figures.]
Aye. And the lot of us standing in defiance against it.
[Even if they were meant to fend off the moon's advance, facing it head-on isn't the absolute worst outcome. Not to Urianger, anyway. It wouldn't be the first time that he has had to do such a thing.
The second image, though...that one is a little more concerning.]
An alternate outcome, I presume. One that leaveth out several of our number.
[Whether they be injured or dead, it's hard to say. The visual leaves much up for interpretation.]
[ Do some of them die? Do some of them leave? Is this even supposed to be them? The figures have no details apart from their number, shadows facing off against this world's biggest and most constant threat. Only it doesn't remain that way.
Once again, the scene shifts, and this time it's an all-too-familiar little mentor, struggling for control against... something? No, not something. Bruno isn't sure why he knows its spirits, but he does. That glow, those lights flickering across the field of the vision, it has to be them, but why? ]
Wait, this is... what? A third outcome? That's... that isn't normal.
[ But this isn't his home world, either. There's no telling how his gift reacts to magic here. ]
That is something we shall have to look into once this is over.
[He's not going to panic over it, and he doesn't want Bruno to panic over it either. His entire thing is interpreting prophecies and this is no different. It'll be okay.
A third, unexpected vision reveals itself in the storm, something completely different and ominous for another reason altogether. Urianger's eyes narrow as he watches Lazuli fight against...something.]
Lazuli... What is happening to thee?
[He doesn't look in control of his senses, but why? And more, what's this about any of this not being normal? He tears his gaze from the vision to look down at Bruno.]
N... not always, no? More like they. They're not completely different? The two moon ones, those kinda make sense, b-but this?
[ It feels separate from the figures confronting the moon. An outcome nonetheless, but one far removed from the other two. Bruno doesn't return Urianger's look, rather he continues watching the winds and flame tearing about them. His grip on his hand remains firm as ever.
Only it would seem the scene isn't stopping at three. The one with the Wanderer, their soon-to-be-missing first mentor, is swept away in the sand and what creeps across the screen the whirlwind creates is the manor itself, their home away from home, only it's burning, all of it, all on fire and none of them to be seen. ]
[Ah, so that's it. It must be more that Bruno's visions usually show multiple outcomes of a single scenario.
Urianger's gaze returns to the storm, just in time to see Lazuli's struggling form dissipate and something else begin to take its place.]
'Twould seem that the magick of this starโof the spiritsโhath altered thine ability into something more potent. Thine eyes doth grant us yet more potential outcomes.
[Even if that potential outcome is even more immediately grim than the previous. At a glance, there is no other way to describe this scene but one of devastation. No matter the cause, it cannot come to pass. With these thoughts running through his mind, he can only imagine what Bruno is feeling. Thus, he gives the other man's hand a squeeze of reassurance. A reminder that there is someone here with him who will not look at this scene of destruction as an absolute. To him, even a vision like this is useful information to have.]
[ Bruno can't help but sound resigned by that fact. He doesn't have many good experiences when it comes to his visions and, even with Urianger there, not seeing it the same way he does, this doesn't change that fact. All he sees are, he assumes, bad outcomes.
Still, after the vision of the burning manor drifts away, the storm itself begins calming and Bruno finally lets go of Urianger's hand to reach up towards the flames before they dissipate entirely. There's no verbal component to it, but the sense that he's bidding them to come down to him is there, and they do just that, obedient to the man who created them. He catches those flames in his hands, only they've begun to form into something else, something solid, and just as the magic powering the whirlwind departs, Bruno uses that same thing as a kind of shield to stop the sand that's now going to drop itself on top of them both.
Oops.
Maybe he should have warned Urianger about that.
Regardless, what's left in his hand is a thick, rough-hewn pane of green... glass? ]
