He avoided me, when he fed off of me. I understand why, but when I tried to help him...he pushed me away again.

No, he... doesn't like that he has to feed off us. He doesn't like... what he is now. To put it into perspective, he would also say: "I think I need to stay away from Yamato. ... I think I've only managed to stress him out more than anything else." But replace stress with hurt, with upset, with any negative thing that could happen.
