That's why I waited a couple of days first. [ Nevermind him deadeyeing the report he feels he ought to write for future reference. Once they arrive in the courtyard, Day seems to get contemplative as he's trying to figure out how he should be teaching Yamato. ]
What sorta magic have you been practising so far here?
Good, so you're getting more used to using magic. [ He considers this important since Yamato had mentioned he comes from a place without it.
But, hmm, okay, maybe he'll try to explain this like how it was explained to him when he went through bureau training... ]
Since magic is cast from the heart here, a curse would come from a feeling of wanting to cause harm or misfortune toward someone, yeah? Now, I can't say I know 'xactly what curses can or can't do here, but back home, curses are a kind of...how to say, manipulation of probabilities and possibilities. Making certain outcomes more or less likely. And I guess a powerful curse would be something that guarantees a specific result.
But that's also why curses work better when you define conditions for them. Like when I said I'd curse someone with bad luck in stuff involving relationships, that's defining a potential pool of bad outcomes for fate to try fulfilling, which makes it more likely to be an impactful one. You could also do it like... cursing someone to have bad luck on a journey, or bad luck when it comes to sensing incoming danger. Instead of just some plain old wishing "bad luck" onto someone, y'know?
So, if I wanted to use a curse on something, I'd have to have some sort of fate or specific idea in mind? For example, cursing an enemy to be confused for a few minutes so I can beat it up?
Something like that. If you're too vague 'bout what the curse should do, it ends up kinda half-assed, but the more specific an outcome you want, that means a more specific chain of events to get there, yeah? And the more things that have to happen in a specific way to get a result, the harder it gets. At least here, I think if you want a curse to do something just like what you're suggesting, it'll take a lot outta you. Especially if there's no obvious way how they'd get confused for a few minutes.
[ This is a bit of conjecture on his part though. The fact that magic runs off feelings here means it asks more from the caster, in Day's opinion. ]
Personally, what I'd do is curse an enemy to have bad luck in battle, and when I see an openin' 'cause of it, I'd take that chance to beat them up. Maybe that means they lose their grip on their weapon while defending themselves, so they're unarmed now. Or maybe that means they fall and happen to smack their head on something after taking a hit...
[ Day why are you saying this like it's a reasonable thing to do (it's something someone in the Division of Battles has done, that's why). ]
Ah, I see. So something still a little more broad that leaves room for any sort of "bad luck" but not anything that'll take too much out of the caster.
[ Day really, really knows what he's doing, huh? Yamato is tempted to pry about that, but for now, he'll refrain. ]
That's what I had in mind, though. Curse them in a way that'll get them distracted enough for me to go in for the kill, or whatever they call it. I'm not adept at fighting just yet, so I'd need all the help I can get on my own.
Bad luck in combat's always useful. I've known some guys who do it as something like, bad luck when dodging attacks, or when defending something. Or when making attacks.
The only ones I can do are the ones for relationships. [ He was just relaying what he knows works for the colleagues over in the Division of Battles. ] And, uh. Normally I try to avoid cursing people if I can help it, but sometimes you have to break some eggs to make an omelette.
[ ...Debating if he should give any specific examples of his own... ]
[ Oh, Day, you've done it now. Let's see how much he can skirt around talking about the bureau, at least. ]
Essentially, yeah? I told you 'fore about how you can curse someone to have bad luck in stuff like...love, business, politics. Relationships are a part of those things. So you can bless someone with good luck pursuing their goals there, and you can curse them with bad luck the same way.

[ He chuckles, good-natured and all, before he steps outside. ]
You're ready to go already?

[ He steps aside so Yamato can go out without being impeded. ]

[ He closes the door behind him. He looks like he's ready to rumble, too. ]
Let's do this, then. I didn't need to bring anything special with me, did I?

[ To the courtyard it is, then!!!! ]
Thanks for taking the time to do this. You're probably exhausted and all.

Does that help any?

It ain't a bad idea. You takin' lessons to fight too? [ It sounds like it, with how Yamato said "yet". ]

I'm grateful for it. I'll keep working hard.

[ :) !!! ]
What's the easiest way to practice?
no subject
...Well, it's be easiest to tell it works if you practiced on another person, but...
[ Haha, using people as curse target practice... It's like he never had to worry about practicing casting curses. ]

[ Just to be safe. ]
In the meantime I'll try to think of some curses to use on them...
