You could say that. It got to me when I didn't ask for it.

[It's not like he had it from the start -- his inventory was pretty much only the clothes on his back -- but when he least expected it, it appeared in his hand]

[ khun doesn't get magic either, and it's providing similar to shinsu where he's not a natural at it frustratingly enough. his fingers lace through his hair to free the bandana he has layered in it, tying his hair up into a quick ponytail in fast, deft movements. ]

I got nothing at the start. It just appeared in my hand during a conversation with someone else.

It could be anything. That Sage said it's rare for one's focus to be destroyed, something about the user's willpower.

Without going into much detail, it was...the most meaningful thing I have seen in years.

[It wasn't a random item, yup. In fact, he's looking for ways to guarantee it won't ever be destroyed. It's that significant -- although truthfully, if before obtaining it anyone had asked him what he thought his focus would be, he wouldn't have thought of that not even in a million years]

[ it's quiet, but still loud enough that Kiryu can hear. khun tosses the potted plant over his shoulder where it shatters with a somewhat satisfying sound. ]

I have things I value, but I wouldn't call them meaningful.

Then how about trying to make something new from scratch? Since you got nothing then make it yourself.

[It's advice he has given around because, as he sees it, making your own focus perhaps can work. Create something with your own two hands, pouring your effort and passion into it, and see if it works!]

khun's already moving to locate whatever's making that noise in the pile. he unearths a box with a latch that's glowing faintly. ]

I looked at this already...! [ undoing the latch reveals a chess board and pieces that have been shuffled out of their holdings due to khun's rough handling. one piece in particular seems to be the source of the sound and light: the white queen. ]

[Oh, a promising sign! In a world like this one, something behaving strangely should be a sign of some sort, and given what Khun needs...this might be just what he needed]

So why is a chess piece meaningful to you?

[Straightforward question, perhaps even personal if it's something too close to Khun's heart -- if that turns out to be the focus]

It's not—I like chess, but- [ he rotates the piece in his hand, the glow resonating in tandem with his heartbeat. ]

The queen's the most powerful and versatile piece, even more than the King. It's capable of all kinds of moves and gambits because of how it moves...

Hah. [ it's obviously he's realized something, khun's expression softening . ] It really should have been the black queen. But I guess with Maria too—that makes enough sense.

[Hoh...seems like there's a whole story here. Kiryu for a moment considers asking, but...hm. Perhaps it'd be too soon. This kind of talk usually happens with a drink, trying to figure out how to solve big problems in each other's lives]

Hm. I'd say magic works in mysterious ways but that sounds too...out there.

If you think it doesn't fit you somehow, you could change its appearance. It's supposed to be the tool that lets you use magic. Least it could do is be what you want it to be.

[...although on the other hand, is it worth the risk? Kiryu wanted to give his own focus indestructible qualities, to protect it forever...but he felt too nervous doing that. If he damaged his focus in any way he'd never forgive himself]

No, it fits me. [ said rather decisively despite all his complaining until a few seconds ago. he is also sir not explaining, but maybe in the future...buy him a drink kiryu i have no idea what the legal age is in tower of god but he's definitely had a drink or two in his young life so it's fine. ]

It's small enough too that I shouldn't need to worry about carrying it. [ tilting his head at kiryu. ]

[For a moment Kiryu considers not telling...but, well, sooner or later he'll have to. That and also it's a way for him to see if talking about it has stopped hitting him emotionally]

...it's a long story. I don't really want to talk about it.

[Mostly because he already can feel a knot in his throat. Kiryu is not an emotional person at all, but this simple thing tugs at his heartstrings so badly because he still can't believe he has this in his hands. It's extremely significant to him -- and it's easy to guess Kiryu is the big one in the center of the drawing. He makes the focus vanish]

[ he can make a few guesses and he does mentally, but keeps them to himself. ]

Hmm, I'd be worried about protecting it. Maybe you can put it in a plaque.

[A plaque...not a bad idea. He'll have to look into that]

I tried to get Tatara to make it sturdier. He's not capable of using magic, though.

[Which he didn't see coming, given how Tatara is one of the two people leading them through all this. It didn't really affect his opinion of Tatara, but it baffled him somewhat]

[ slight eyebrow raise. khun will remember this conversation later when he's talking to tatara in the bath, but in this moment he just assumes that is was more a case of "don't want to" rather than "can't". ]

What about the short one?

I don't doubt he's capable of magic. He has that attitude of someone who can't believe others can't handle something simple.
