[ The more he tries out this magic thing, the more he realizes that he can't fight. He can't fight! And that seems pretty important if you want to be good at magic and all that. He knows Urianger offered to teach him how to use magic, and Ginger also extended his help to Yamato, but there's someone on his floor who's just. Right there. Someone who seems like he'd be good at it.
So. Knock knock, Kurapika. No, it's not the roomba this time. ]
[ Unsurprisingly, Kurapika is prompt in opening the door. He isn't in his full suit this time, the jacket instead draped over the chair at his desk and his tie laying on his bed. There's also a book in his hand, closed around his index finger so he can go right back to reading. ]
No, not really. Sorry to bother you. I just had...something I've been thinking about.
[ An oddly serious way to start a conversation, given their first meeting, but eh. ]
This magic thing is gonna require some kind of combat knowledge, isn't it? People should know how to use it effectively, but here I am, not knowing much about fighting.
I won't take up too much of your time. I'm just asking for a few pointers.
[ Oddly serious is Kurapika's middle name (and last name, since he apparently doesn't have one). Kurapika isn't thrown by the shift in tone from their last meeting, not at all, and he even steps aside so Yamato can come into his room.
It's a neat room, and though he's still adding to it, there's a desk and a bookshelf already there aside from the bed. ]
What would you like to know? I'm experienced in hand-to-hand combat and various weapons.
So, Kurapika reaches into his pocket and pulls out his gun, pointing it right at Yamato. If he knows enough about guns, he'd be able to tell that the safety is very much on. ]
[ He's just kept it in his pocket for the most part. ]
I have the safety on, though, so don't worry about me actually shooting you. I just want a gauge for how well you can defend yourself when faced with a stressor.
[ OOF. That hurts. Kurapika does his best to tank it, however, exhaling forcefully enough that the elbow doesn't send him back.
He does, however, let go. It's honestly a miracle that Kurapika isn't doubling over right now, but he'll save that for when Yamato leaves and he can ruminate in the pain. ]
So you do have something I can work with, at least. If you're threatened enough, it looks like you can muster up a bit of strength.
[ He doesn't flinch at being called "teacher", but that's only because he's used to being addressed as "boss". ]
You need to know what to do when someone attacks you from behind.
[ And there's a bit of a height difference between them, so Kurapika doesn't know how effective this will really be, but... he'll attempt to tackle Yamato from behind (9), holding steadily onto his torso. ]
In this situation, you'll drop your weight so that I can't hold onto you so easily. Doing so disorients the attacker enough to allow you to turn the situation back around on them.
[ It's a successful tackle (6, get fucked) and Yamato gets pinned onto the ground. Kurapika is effectively holding him down, but he follows Kurapika's instructions and...wow, this is a mess.
Yamato drops his weight and tries to roll over so Kurapika topples over, but he's just sort of stuck (4). ]
Yamato would take a deep breath if Kurapika wasn't sitting on his back, but he takes a moment to steady himself. Then, he leverages himself using his leg -- just enough to lift himself up and take a sharp turn with his back to shake Kurapika off of him.
Realistically, Kurapika could put more pressure on Yamato and pin him down harder, using his other hand to grab at his leg and truly lock him into place, but that isn't how anyone learns.
Yamato's move is creative (and decent) enough to shake Kurapika off, and he's forced to let go of his wrist and fall back onto the floor beside Yamato. ]
[ Yamato has a feeling that Kurapika is going very, very easy on him, but he appreciates it. He's pretty sure he'd get nowhere if the guy used his full strength. It's clear that he's got a lot of it.
Yamato can't help but grin at his own progress. ]
Ah, that worked? Heh, good. See? I'm a fast learner.
week 1
So. Knock knock, Kurapika. No, it's not the roomba this time. ]

Yamato. Is something wrong?
no subject
No, not really. Sorry to bother you. I just had...something I've been thinking about.

It's a neat room, and though he's still adding to it, there's a desk and a bookshelf already there aside from the bed. ]
What would you like to know? I'm experienced in hand-to-hand combat and various weapons.
[ Because of course he is. ]
no subject
Uh...either, I think. Whatever's easiest to teach. I've never tried either of those before.
[ never mind that he looked a man in the eye while being held at gunpoint and just sprayed him in the face with an aerosol ]
no subject
[ And their difficulties.
So, Kurapika reaches into his pocket and pulls out his gun, pointing it right at Yamato. If he knows enough about guns, he'd be able to tell that the safety is very much on. ]
Try and disarm me and we'll go from there.
[ Roll for disarm success! :) ]
nat 1 in next tag
what ]
H-hang on, where'd you get that? Do we really have to be this extreme?!
[ He's been held at gunpoint before but also. Hello??? ]
no subject
[ He's just kept it in his pocket for the most part. ]
I have the safety on, though, so don't worry about me actually shooting you. I just want a gauge for how well you can defend yourself when faced with a stressor.
[ E.g., a gun. ]
no subject
[ He takes a step forward and
trips.
He trips. He falls face first onto the ground, right in front of Kurapika. Completely beefed the assignment. ]
1/2
Oh.
...
Well. Alright then. ]
no subject
I think I have my work cut out for me with you.
[ Not that he minds, but damn. ]
Try again. Don't trip this time.
no subject
[ Crawling...back...onto his feet.
He's trying this again. He moves in to try to knock the gun out of Kurapika's hand by swinging his arm towards his wrist, but he ends up, uh.
Smacking Kurapika in the face instead...and completely missing the gun. ]
no subject
With a sigh, Kurapika pockets his gun. ]
You're starting from square zero, it seems.
[ And then, without warning, he moves to grab onto Yamato's wrist and twist it behind his back to lock him in place. ]
no subject
[ Ouch, ouch!! It's not a break or anything like that but he's not used to being handled so harshly. Damn. This guy knows what he's doing.
He will attempt to elbow him in the stomach... ]
no subject
He does, however, let go. It's honestly a miracle that Kurapika isn't doubling over right now, but he'll save that for when Yamato leaves and he can ruminate in the pain. ]
So you do have something I can work with, at least. If you're threatened enough, it looks like you can muster up a bit of strength.
[ It's no Enhancer punch, but it'll do. ]
no subject
[ He's actually smirking, proud of himself, but he's bracing himself for another fast one Kurapika may or may not pull on him. ]
Was that enough of a demonstration for you?
no subject
[ He has enough now to figure out what Yamato should focus on, so he'll go ahead and start formulating his own curriculum. ]
I think you'd benefit from some basic self defense in tandem with weapon training.
no subject
[ He needs a moment to catch his breath, though. Give him a sec. In and out... ]
Whatever you want, teacher.
no subject
You need to know what to do when someone attacks you from behind.

Geez...am I doing this -- at the wrong angle?
[ Said through gritted teeth. ]
no subject
You're overthinking it, Yamato.
[ Kurapika takes one of Yamato's wrist and twists, pinning his wrist to his back and using that force to press him against the floor (15). ]
Take a deep breath and relax. Think of ways you can get out of my hold. Get creative.
no subject
Yamato would take a deep breath if Kurapika wasn't sitting on his back, but he takes a moment to steady himself. Then, he leverages himself using his leg -- just enough to lift himself up and take a sharp turn with his back to shake Kurapika off of him.

Good job.

[ SORRY, YAMATO????
Kurapika stands, smoothing out his suit. ]
But you learn well enough. You aren't a lost cause, at least.
