[ About a day or so after the Southern wizards return from their mission, Day's gonna knock on Ginger's door. He's got a bottle of wine from the gift basket he received and it's high time he pays a social call. ]
[ Yes, he hears it so he doesn’t answer the door, goodbye -
No, he answers promptly. He’s dressed down today, outside of his work uniform for once. Just a cozy sweater and some sweats. When he sees Solomon, his mouth makes a funny sound. ]
[ Briefly, Ginger had thought to bring Mika to his own room. But - no, no, he wants Mika safe with him, in a space that has Ginger’s touch all over. Claims. Everything important stored here.
And Mika is the most important. He’s set on the bed, nestled in pillows and a thick comforter. Mika may not feel things as easily, but comfort is different. He seems to like that - soft, warm touches.
And more than comfort, Mika needs blood. The wrist is a choice, but Ginger goes for his palm instead. A deep cut across, blood dripping rapidly from his fist into Mika’s waiting mouth. It stings sharply in the way straight cuts tend to, delayed at first like it’s not even there.
But it’s a good reminder, he thinks.
This time, feeding Mika hurts. It cost tears and rage, Ginger’s lashes still clinging damply every time he blinks. It’ll be bandaged with guilt when he thinks to take care of it later; when he remembers that under his mended uniform, his back is full of long scratches that he doesn’t want Mika to see; when he remembers he owes Khun more than just a conversation or a knife to the neck.
( Mika does not dream well. It's not Yamato's fault. He just sees the same thing he's seen for years - the screaming, the blood, small bodies crush against the floor. Yuu.
A new dream joins him tonight, though; the dream he saw in his last moments, before coming to this strange world. A peaceful night at the orphanage; talking with Yuu, way past their bedtimes. A monster attacking. Mika taking up a knife - all of them finding out that Mika's the monster, and has been all along.
Yuu doesn't make it out, this time.
He blames Mika, like he always should have.
But, like always, he didn't stop Mika, no matter how much he begged. No one ever stops him. No one ever puts him down. Why?
Why?
Mika rouses slow and languid, the curse heavy on his bones, but fading with every moment. He isn't much of anything as he does - not Mika, not a vampire - but the rich sensation that ripples from his tongue, beckons him awake before even the scent or sense of Ginger does. He doesn't begin to wake immediately. It still takes a little time, but he begins to come to.
Wanderer's charm, which is definitely not something I'm forgetting about at this juncture, keeps him steady as he stirs, his eyes opening slightly. He's hungry - hungry as hell, still, despite what he'd gotten off Jing Yuan, but he's still himself - mostly. He's exhausted, and groggy - barely awake, as the last of the curse leaves him.
With a tired hand, he reaches up for Ginger's wrist - not a fierce grip, like what he'd tried on Yamato, but one that tries to pull his palm against his lips, so he can lick the wound directly, as if it were a thing of honey.
Sweet... Sweet, and familiar, and all of this - soft.
Ah... )
... Ginger...?
( A dazed voice, but one used to speak of something safe - a fireplace, a warm bed on a rainy day, hot chocolate with a friend.
He's coming to, he's coming to... the shock and guilt will settle in a moment - until then, he can live blissfully unaware of the sin of existence. )
[ Turning his upper body slightly to catch Mika waking, then he’s swinging his long legs over the bed to face him completely. It makes it easier to run his free hand through his hair, brushing it back from his forehead. Light touches as though right now Mika’s more fragile than he can bear.
His voice is back. Good. He’s aware enough to want more blood, to grab Ginger’s hand. Also good.
But Ginger thinks he should sleep more. He can feel how weak Mika is, the grip around his wrist has practically no strength at all. So he holds it closer for Mika; the other just needs to hold on.
(He’s so sad and guilty his body doesn’t even react to the licks this time.) ]
[ In the day or so after {all that}, Day has gotten tipsy, mulled over some ideas, gone to the library in some vain attempt to do research (mostly fruitless), and come to terms that he is quite possibly going to have to do certain things the reckless way, not the clever one. He's been approaching this the same way the bureau does missions: here is the intel, here are the potential wrinkles, the rest is at your discretion.
It's only when he has a plan in mind that he goes to knock on Ginger's door.]
[ The door opens after a moment, and once Ginger sees that it's Day, he opens it wide - come in, he nods. Today, the bay windows are left unlatched, inviting in the spring breeze, as though he's trying to cleanse all the bad that happened the day before. ]
[House calls weren't exactly what she had been expecting to do when they first got to this place and were told to learn magic, but it's what she finds herself doing after last night's incident. She'd witnessed the brawl that ensued, after all, so she didn't miss that Khun gave as good as he got.
So here she is in front of Ginger's door, during the late morning after last night's mess. Knock knock!]
[ Despite everything, he manages a smile for her when he opens the door. It's faint, though genuine. He'd otherwise not been in the mood for smiling, but... it's Maya. ]
[ After that whole conversation, above, Day spent the rest of his day in his room, only emerging later in the evening to get something to eat and then meeting up with Ginger. They both leave on their brooms for the woods, just a little way from the manor, where they hopefully shouldn't be bothered or noticed.
They settle at a clearing where they'll be able to see the night sky, and Day starts to get to work. With a piece of chalk, Day draws a circle on the ground, and one would assume it'd be a magic circle, but instead, he fills it like a star chart, drawing constellations that Ginger wouldn't recognise and which don't quite match the stars above them. Occasionally Day mumbles to himself as he erases mistakes and redraws lines in one half of the circle; something about how he really should brush up on the House of Journeys.
Once he's done with that, he stands up and fishes out the intended charm from a satchel: a weaved bracelet made out of blue and yellow cord, tied off with matching beads for adjustment. He holds it out to Ginger. ]
'Fore we start, you can give it your own enchantment, if you want. [ He wants to involve Ginger in this beyond just the blood offering, if possible. ] I'll work with it.
[ Ginger with his angel face and his pale hair appears an existence out of place as he broods. A shadow discolored, displaced by the bay window’s lights.
Mere hours isn’t enough time for Ginger to think anything through; it’s hardly enough time to even start to fret. Is he doing the right thing? He doesn’t know. What will he say to Mika? He doesn’t know. What will he do when he sees Khun next? He doesn’t know. Would he really have killed someone? He… doesn’t -
… He hates that uncertainty grips him like a collar, choking his answers. He should know, but his heart hammers in his chest and he just - doesn’t.
When the sky changes and signals their meeting time, Ginger follows Day into the woods. ]
Oh… It won’t interfere with your magic…? [ It’s stalling more than a real question, as he thinks of what enchantment he’d want for Mika. He had practice some with Solomon, so he knows how to do this more or less. He takes the bracelet, carefully folding his fingers around it. ] How about… Mm. Okay.
Tell All One’s Heart.
[ The enchantment is nothing fancy, just a wish - that should Mika ever feel alone, a memory of warmth and company will help him remember a friend. Ginger’s magic is as delicate as the lilies in his room. Too much of it and his intentions are trampled.
When he’s done, the bracelet is returned to Day. ]
[ Sometimes a ghost decides to leave a PTSD parting shot but you're too sleep-deprived to really process it at the moment, so you're fine (or at least functional) then.
Then you go the fuck to sleep for a few hours, wake up, and it slams into you like a runaway cart.
Day is not sure how long he lay there in bed staring straight up at the ceiling, wondering if he stepped out of the room he'd discover no one remembered him, but he was definitely there for a while. It's only after a couple of visits and his deciding to make some rounds that he starts to feel something like a reasonable person again, having some proof that the nightmare was just a nightmare, and that's when he finally feels presentable enough to head over to Ginger's room.
When Ginger opens the door, it's obvious that Day is...well, better than he was that morning when he was || close to being dead on his feet, but he is not very serene. If anything he seems a little untethered, and not in a great way. ]
I'm here to explain myself... [ Like he wordlessly said he would. ]
[ It only takes one glance from Ginger before he pulls Day in by the arm. He bypasses the usual banquette bench and leads them straight to his bed, where he pushes the other down. ]
How much sleep have you had in the past couple of days?
[ If Ginger had a nickel for everyone who used his window instead of his door as an entrance - he'd have two nickels, which is 200% more than he expected.
What Ithaqua knocks on are large bay windows that open into a banquette bench, cushioned and pillowed. There's a small table that finishes the window corner, set with a vase full of lilies. Conveniently because of the first nickel, the windows are unlatched and despite the confused look on Ginger's face, he pushes the window open for this batty existence. Come on in??? ]
Um, hello. [ But then he puts a finger to his lips. ] Mika's sleeping so we'll have to be a bit quiet.
[ Ginger himself looks flushed, red around the nose like he has a cold - which he does. Damn rain. ]
( It's been a difficult week for Mika, so retained by the moon. He about passed out on Ginger's way back to the rooms, and since then has not been awake in any coherent fashion. There have been groggy passings where he seemed blearily awake and capable of speech, holding fast to Ginger and pleading that he stay - perhaps out of attachment, and perhaps because he seems afraid of something that seems fast encroaching - before slipping back into feverish, marbled dreams not long after. Visions of his families, dead; the automatons, their singing; the children warped by experiments; Ginger, or Yuu, standing with their backs to him, beneath the moon as it descends, and it would envelope them.
But not every vision was fitful. After the first night, there was a strange alteration to the pattern of his rest: he seemed somehow disturbed by something, after those brief periods of wakefulness. Sometimes, that disturbance seemed positive; he seemed to rest better. When Ginger would speak to him before he drifted off to sleep again, his rest would sometimes seem especially good. The automatons' songs would become a harmony, and there would not be the moon, but Ginger smiling bright beneath the sun...
His conditioned seemed to improve across the week, until today, when Ginger returns to his room this evening, he'll see Mika sitting up at the bay window, gazing at the sky outside - a first for him since he fell sick. He's in his sleepwear still (a loose, button-up shirt and pajama shorts; I've kept him dressed the entire game let me have this—), and he seems a little sleepy... but much more alert than before.
He looks up, when Ginger comes in. )
... Ginger.
( Hello, how are you, are you okay - the sort of things he means when he says his name this way. )
[ It was scary how long and deep Mika slept when he hadn’t seemed to ever need it before.
The first couple of days had Ginger in a fatigued trance, hazy from his cold and strained by his worry over Mika. But there were things he had to pass along to the others before his memory was distorted by time, so when Mika was lost in the deepest of dreams, Ginger would slip out then - and only then.
At all other times, he was with Mika. Feeding him carefully when he could, from his wrist for the most part. Whispering warm nonsense at him if he was awake enough for that, punctuating his pauses with careful kisses. And thinking: once Mika woke up properly, he would ask him to stay.
So today is unexpected. Today seemed like it would be better than yesterday, but he had expected much of the same. Blankets and murmurs and a devoted vigil for his sleeping beauty.
Light comes back into his eyes then instant he sees Mika, all of him straightening. ]
Mika -
[ His steps quicken before his mouth closes over the name - after all it takes time to fit I love you in a name. He drops to his knees before his love, hugging him around the waist. Not puppy-eager today when relief makes him weak in the knees. ]
Good morning. [ And he means again: I love you. I missed your eyes and your mouth and the way the world revolves around you like it’s helplessly in love because you’re awake. ] How do you feel?
[For once, Ithaqua has knocked on a door... but disappears immediately, leaving behind a hint of his magical signature and a small paper bag with half a dozen buns of freshly baked sourdough, each one slightly smaller than a fist, perfectly bite-sized. There's also fruit jam inside, nice and sweet, and with not a lot of that overly processed sugar Ithaqua dislikes either. How did he get it in there? Magic, of course. What flavors are there? Strawberry, blueberry, peach, lemon marmalade, and orange marmalade.
Enjoy! Don't burn the manor down while the Northies are gone.]
